….....if I take this week off from TOP SHELF MUSIC for some birthday celebrations. It wouldn’t seem right sitting in a radio studio all by myself….back on JULY 1st with a sensationally stunning show. Cheers , I’ll have one ( or several ) for you , Duncan.

TOP SHELF MUSIC 4-6 p.m. Sunday 17th June 89.7FM  lock the dial on this little load of new toons :

P.J. O’BRIEN ( Perth bluesman with superb new ball-tearer) WARD’S XPRESS (more magnificent Oz blues/rock off e.p. offering ) LOONLAKE ( dynamite debut e.p. by Melbourne 5 piece ) DEEP SEA ARCADE ( cracking debut album from Sydney song smiths ) BLIND LEMON ( Brisbane band with brilliant blues corker) ST.JUDE (English band compared to Faces/Black Crowes with maximum rock & soul ) JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE (son of Steve with highly acclaimed 5th release ) ERIC BIBB ( N.Y.C. stalwart with very tasty newie ) You’ll be on a high all week…Cheers   Duncan.

Just a quick wrap of today’s “ State of the Art “ W.A. music event at Perth Concert Hall.

I had to juggle between acts I had tickets for indoors  , &  the outside stages at the front & rear of the venue. Outside I caught 4 songs by Steve Parkin & his band , and wish I’d seen more , as they sounded damn good. The Ghost Hotel had my attention for about 45 minutes & were pretty good  , with the songs off their newly released album scrubbing up nicely. I only managed catch the last song from San Cisco who came across well (the girl drummer who alsosings , sounds like she’s barely out of nappies !! )

The big performances were the indoor shows where I had 8th & 3rd row seats  respectively.Sorry Jebediah fans I am not a convert after their 60 minute set. They were o.k. but just didnot ignite my fuse. I thought Kevin Mitchell’s vocals were adequate at best.  Eskimo Joe were a whole different display  , with a polished set with plenty of light & shade , and an overall rating of excellent. Kav Temperley is a very fine vocalist. The Hoodoo Gurus whipped the audience into a frenzy ( even with Dave Faulkner recovering from the flu. ) Despite security’s best attempts , the dancing could not be quashed & the energy from the band was contagious. It was a raucous , rollicking performance & maybe only slightly shaded by “ The Eskies. “

All in all a very good day out with some wonderful W.A. talent on show.    Wish you’d been there.
