STEVE POLTZ The Fly Trap Fremantle Thursday 10/05/12

To call this the experience of a lifetime is not over-exaggerating . I don’t think I’ve ever been witness to a more unique , exciting & exhilarating concert performance. Steve Poltz is best known for writing songs with Jewel , & told me this was his 11th trip to Perth ( his new album Noineen Noiny Noin , the year he first visited us , was recorded in Perth . ) After 2 & a half hours of non-stop , full-on entertainment , it is hard to find the words to do justice to what an awesome show this was. Steve’s guitar skills are red hot enough , but add the exceptionally versatile voice ( 2 songs sung in full falsetto mode & some astounding vocal effects ) , a sense of humour to embarrass the best comedians & a song book full of emotion , diversity , warmth & laughter , around 60-70 people had their jaws bouncing off The Fly Trap floor.
To say the man enjoyed his work is the understatement of the century . He bore a smile as wide as the Atlantic & his laughter , zany manner & smattering of outlandish craziness were infectious. There were songs sung on tables , with i-phone backing accompaniment , accapella style , with beats & loops ( the hilarious “ I’ll sleep on the wet spot “ ) & just with sheer plain old raw emotion. At a measly $20 I would defy anyone from 8 to 80 not to be consumed , engrossed & totally astounded by this rare talent.
At times you had to wonder what Steve Poltz was on , but whatever it was , we all need some. I am truly sorry I went alone , as you missed out on the gig of a lifetime. Next time I’ll drag people with me by the scruff of the neck…….wish you’d been there. Thanks Steve Poltz for a fantastic , one-off & totally unique performance.
